Research Profile

After completing my PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1989 at the University of Sydney, I commenced work at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) where I was involved in the research and development of novel cyclotron based radiopharmaceuticals for use in nuclear medicine. During this time period, I have also worked as a visiting scientist at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry “Forschungszentrum Julich” Research Centre, Germany (1991) and at the “Service Hospitalier Frederich Joliot” Orsay, Paris France 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002. On all these occasions I led the development and pharmacological evaluation of novel (Positron emitting Tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals.

My research activities during the last 14 years have been focused on the synthesis and evaluation of receptor based radiopharmaceuticals, amino acid analogues and metabolic precursors for the study of both neurodegenerative diseases and oncology. Of significance, is the breadth of our research program, ranging from chemical and radiochemical synthesis, to preclinical studies in rodents and primates and finally to clinical trials. As a consequence, today I am extensively involved in a clinical research program where I am responsible for the provision of new tracers for evaluation in both oncology and neuroscience with five major teaching hospitals from around Australia. In addition to these national institutions, I am also involved in a major international collaboration in PET and SPECT radiopharmaceutical chemistry under the Australia-France collaboration in Nuclear Biomedicine focusing on Multidrug resistance and neurodegeneration. I hold an Honorary Research Fellowship at the University of Wollongong and the University of Sydney.
